Laser hair removal is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures worldwide. It is considered to be a safe and probably the most effective method of getting rid of unwanted body hair.

What should you know about laser hair removal?

Body hair growth depends on genetic factors, hormonal balance, especially with a dominant androgen (with higher production of male hormones and relatively fewer female hormones, even if hormone tests in the blood are good), as well as the characteristics of the hair follicles (e.g. sensitivity of the follicle to hormones), skin condition, general physical health, even lifestyle, medications or supplements used. Therefore, it is impossible to predict exactly how many hair removal sessions will be needed in an individual case, especially since the hair structure, color and position of the follicle in the skin can also differ. From experience, we see that some clients need 4 treatments, while others need 8 or more (especially if new hair is constantly forming under the influence of hormones, e.g. on the face).
We use brand new Asclepion MeDioStar Monolith medical lasers. German hair removal lasers are some of the most efficient, fastest and most powerful devices on the market. The built-in 360° skin cooling system enables safe and painless treatment. This hair removal laser is characterized by its ability to work with alexandrite wavelengths of 810 nm, 940 nm and 755 nm, destroying not only the hair follicle but also the capillary that supplies this follicle during the procedure. This ensures the efficiency and speed of the treatment and greater patient comfort than ever before.
To remove hair with extreme precision, we use two types of handpieces with these lasers: the 10 cm² Monolith XL handpiece for fast hair removal in larger areas and the extremely precise and super-fast 1 cm² Monolith S handpiece for even greater precision in intimate areas. We use both handpieces to achieve the best possible results on the whole body.
Laser hair removal is not possible during pregnancy. Other cases include cancer, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Complications can occur in people who take antibiotics, certain photosensitizing drugs or cosmetics with photo-toxic substances during treatment, as well as in people with epilepsy. The procedure is not performed immediately after intensive sunbathing or tanning. The hair will not be removed with the laser if there is a tattoo in the selected area.
Breastfeeding is not a strict contraindication for laser hair removal, but the hormonal changes can affect the effectiveness. In addition, there is a small chance that the potential stress on the body will reduce the amount of milk, so the woman should decide for herself whether she wants to have the procedure at this time.
Although laser hair removal is a relatively safe procedure, complications may occur in rare cases (e.g. redness, swelling, short- and long-term skin discoloration, pigment changes, small scars). To achieve the best possible result and to reduce the risk of complications, it is essential to prepare well for the procedure:
- 4-6 weeks before the procedure, the hair should no longer be removed (e.g. by waxing, epilating or using tweezers); the treated area can only be shaved. Before the procedure, we recommend shaving the chosen area to make the treatment faster and painless. In addition, hair must not be bleached before laser hair removal.
- Before the procedure, it is needed to shave the selected area to make the treatment faster and painless.
- Do not bleach your hair or use hair removal creams before laser hair removal.
- Do not use self-tanners during the treatment phase.
- Do not tan in the sun or in a solarium for 2 weeks before and after each treatment. If you cannot avoid sunlight, you should use a cream with SPF50.
- Maximum hygiene of the treated area is required before and after treatment.
- Avoid using body cosmetics that you have not tried before for a few days before and after your visit, and do not apply creams, lotions, perfumes, etc. to the depilated area.
- It is always necessary to inform the specialist performing the laser treatment about the medications being taken, especially hormonal or antibiotic ones.
Some users mistakenly associate photoepilation (IPL) with laser hair removal. The light emitted during photoepilation has a different wavelength, is incoherent and acts on the skin surface, so it is significantly less effective than lasers. In addition, photoepilation carries a higher risk of complications. In contrast, the light emitted by lasers is coherent, the beam is not scattered and is tuned to penetrate the required layer of skin and to act directly on the hair follicles.
The popularity of diode lasers has increased recently. These lasers not only have a similar efficiency to Nd:YAG and alexandrite, but also cause fewer complications. Thanks to its unique cooling technology, the MeDioStar laser also removes hair without causing any pain. Its laser beam works deep within the skin and does not affect the melanocytes, making it suitable for both light and dark skin and causing pigmentation disorders only in very rare cases.
According to our clients, the procedure performed with this laser is not painful. Most often, a cold sensation and a slight tingling are felt, but this cannot be described as pain. If the procedure is performed on more sensitive areas and you experience severe discomfort, inform the specialist and the power of the device will be reduced.
Before the treatment, the specialist will provide comprehensive advice and assess your hair color, structure and skin condition to determine whether this method is suitable for you. At the beginning of the treatment, the specialist will use a white pencil to divide the depilation area into zones (if necessary, after shaving with a disposable razor), apply a colorless, odorless, water-based gel and start the hair removal. During the procedure, the specialist will ask you to wear protective goggles.
The tip of the hair removal laser is cooled, so you should not feel any pain. Some clients feel a slight tingling sensation, a tickling, but usually just a cold sensation. Some depilation areas are individually more sensitive to pain. Be sure to inform the specialist if you feel pain that can be reduced by intensifying the cooling of the treated area or reducing the pulse strength.
Diode lasers are considered a safer choice not only because of the longer beam, but also because of the technology itself. Alexandrite lasers deliver all the intended energy in one “shot” to destroy the follicles, while diode lasers can distribute the energy in several pulses. This not only makes the procedures significantly less painful, but also reduces the risk of burns and pigment changes.
Due to a different operating technology, the Alexandrite laser works in the melanin layer (at a depth of about 755 nm), which increases the risk of increased pigmentation in the hair removal area after treatment. Meanwhile, the beam of the diode laser is longer (about 810 nm) and penetrates deeper into the skin, destroying the deeper hair follicles. As a result, diode lasers are very popular around the world for removing thick, heavy hair, for example in the armpits, bikini line or other areas.
Another important aspect is the ability to remove hair in all seasons and for all skin types. Alexandrite lasers were developed for lighter skin and dark hair, so it can be dangerous to perform procedures with this type of device on tanned, dark skin, and strong sun protection is almost always required in summer. Diode lasers are suitable for all skin types, so only a minimal burn break is required before treatment, and laser hair removal with this type of device is also safe for dark-skinned people.
The main difference between Alexandrite and Diode lasers is the wavelength. The Alexandrite laser (755 nm) does not penetrate as deeply into the skin, but is well absorbed by the melanin in the hair. The Diode laser (810 nm) works deeper and is safer for slightly darker skin tones. According to scientific studies, both the Diode laser and the Alexandrite laser are very effective, but due to certain hair or skin characteristics, such as the depth of the follicle in the skin, one or the other choice may be more effective for some people.
